EMD E3A, E6A & E6B Diesel Units Atlantic Coast Line |
|
The
Atlantic Coast Line trailed its rival, the Seaboard Air Line by almost a
year in receiving its first diesel locomotives, but would soon pass them
in total ownership of early EMC locomotives. The first two diesel
units purchased by the ACL were slant-nose, 2000 horsepower, E3A units
numbered 500 and 501 for the road's premier New York to Miami train, The
Champion.
The E3A units were soon joined by 13 more EMC passenger units, 11 E6As numbered 502-512, and ACL's first B units, numbered 750-B and 751-B. Offering high-speed (100 MPH), lower cost motive power, the EMC units were integral in the hot competition for the New York to Florida traffic. By the end of 1942, the ACL had bought 24 EMC A units, along with 5 B units, all dressed in the distinctive purple and silver scheme inspired by ACL President "Champ" Davis. |
