Henry M. Flagler, Dixie Flagler & The Champion ACL & FEC |
||
On December 1, 1939, a joint
Atlantic Coast Line and Florida East Coast lightweight Budd coach streamliner,
The Champion, was placed in service between New York and Miami.
Powered by EMC E3 diesels, the stainless steel consist was an answer to
the rival Seaboard Air Line's Silver Meteor. Two day later, on December 3, 1939,
the Florida East
Coast placed the Henry M. Flagler in service between Miami and Jacksonville,
Florida with identical Budd-built equipment. One year later the equipment
for the Henry M. Flagler was reassigned to the Chicago to Miami “Dixie Flagler”
to run every third day in conjunction with Illinois Central's City of
Miami and the Pennsylvania's South Wind. |
